It was a wet one….

Bike: Commencal Meta 5.5
Distance: 11 miles

With no riding this coming weekend due to family stuff, I hatched a plan with Dave for a loop around the forest for Thursday evening, the weather build up wasn’t looking the greatest with heavy rain showers and a lovely gusting wind, but needs must and I needed to ride!

Driving up to the forest I was greeted by a river of water running down the road, great, it’s going to be a wet muddy one for June, I wasn’t proved wrong…

It always amazes me just how much water one small pine needle can hold, my Howies jacket is great but sadly not fully waterproof (only spray), so couldn’t cope with the volume of water and I ended up soaked through, good job I just bought one of these, that should keep the water at bay in this great summer we are having.

The trails weren’t in bad shape, a lot of water and a bit of mud, good fun though, Deer Trail is fast becoming a favourite, the track is bedding in well and another few days work on it should have it perfect, the technical climb out needs a few roots dug out to make it cleanable in one go.

All in all a short ride really, one puncture at the end and a mass midgie eating frenzy was enough to send us back to the cars, a couple of hours later a look at my legs and they were covered in either pine needle pricks or midgie bites, nice!!

The first day of summer

Distance: 32.8 miles

Ah the first day of another glorious British summer, yeah right, 12 degrees, pissing with rain and a howling wind, felt more like October.

No mountain biking as such today, yes I was on a mountain bike but it was mainly tarmac and some lake towpath thrown in, this was all in aid of Marie Curie and it was well worth it, a 50k sponsored ride, weather forecast by Thursday anticipated clear skies and sunshine, reality was somewhat different as the first 27 miles was a case of pouring rain, rivers of water running down the road and a headwind that just wanted to push you backwards.

I headed off at a decent’ish pace but the weather was no friend and in the end I was more than happy to get round in 2.5 hours for the 33 miles, not a great pace, but I was happy enough, actually felt more life in the legs in the last 10 miles than the first 23, so guess it just took a while to get going.

Worked out though that the SDG saddle is not the most comfortable for me for sustained hours sitting on the mountain bike, am looking at one of these as they are rated the most comfortable for longer rides!

I guess I’ll get all the sleep I need when I am dead

Insomnia, insomnia when will you leave me be, man this is killing me, must be 5 weeks since I’ve had a decent nights sleep, need some new age hippy remedy to knock me out….the 6am turbo session was fun this morning as I sat there pedalling and yawning, not even the vocal tenacity of JS Clayden could knock me out of my semi-comatose state, still managed a short 45 mins which is better than nothing, then was regretting not loading the ipod up with some new tunes, got a bucket load of Misfits to get through!!

Looks like I am going to have to be a little more inventive the next couple of weeks to get any mountain bike rides in, family commitments and the charity bike ride this Sat are killing off the weekends, time for a couple of mid-week mountain climbs up Slieve Gallion, that’ll get the mountain legs working, need to do something quick as it is 12 short weeks until the Merida – panic not quite setting in, but getting close!

Looks like Dicky has the jerseys sorted, nice one!!

I think we’re alone now…

Bike: Commencal Meta 5.5
Distance: 24.5 miles

So here was me thinking there was going to be a crowd out on Saturday morning, however things didn’t quite work out like that, for various reasons and no-shows it was me on my own again.

The road ride up to the forest was painful, mentally because I just couldn’t be bothered and physically because I think I indulged in one Cobra too many the night before, the onset of rain didn’t exactly help things, but there is also a silver lining and after 45 minutes or so the legs eventually woke up!!

The sun then appeared to make things better and all in all it was a cracking ride, for some reason it really hurt the legs, not sure why but it’s all good anyway.  Trails were still in excellent shape, nothing better than hammering singletrack at full tilt, the only other thing I saw was an adult deer which decided to run across the road in front of me!

I am still really impressed with the new Kenda Nevegal tyres, I’ve found myself leaning deeper into the corners and these things just grip, the new Endura MT500 shorts were a god-send as well, much much more comfortable than the standard Endura clickfast shorts, it was nice to sit on a saddle for nearly 3 hours and not feel discomfort!!

The motionbased stats show that the legs were not there, will just put it down to a bad day!

A mad rush….

Bike: Commencal Meta 5.5
Distance: 8.3 miles

A mad dash home, trying to avoid the early evening rush so I could squeeze a quick 50 minute loop in before dinner was served, or more accurately before I reheated my sauce and cooked some pasta, anyway I digress!!

The clouds look ominous but the weather was still perfect, it’ll end sometime, hopefully not just yet, so after Saturday’s hell with the tarmac it was time for some off-road action, quick saddle up of the meta and I was off.  Not a bad run out, no hellhounds and I managed to get the legs and lungs burning, can’t be bad for just a 50 minute ride.

Was looking at this race today, sounds really tempting, 19th July works into our summer plans for holidays and stuff, just the financials to work out and also the fact it is only 5 weeks away and a 12 hour race as well, just like the idea of adding a couple of races in this summer, get the competitive juices flowing….watch this space.

Tarmac Love…..

Bike: Cotic Roadrat
Distance: 50 miles

The numbers were low for a mountain bike ride yesterday, actually just myself so motivation was low to get myself sorted in time to get over to Cookstown early enough, decided to hit the roads instead, with the idea of getting my first 50 mile ride in.

Well operation from that point of view was a success but I realised something afterwards:-

1. Road rides greater than 2 hours are a complete bore – well to me anyway
2. My singlespeed roadrat was a painful cockpit for a 3 hour ride, shoulders and neck are aching today
3. Mountain biking is the best thing in the world!!

Anyway got my 50 miles in will not be aiming for 100 miles any day soon, or at least until I can work out how to make the riding more comfortable from a neck and shoulders viewpoint.

Motionbased stuff here!
